Lacquer Pendants

Lacquer painting, known as sơn mài, from resin of the sơn tree, rhus succedanea, was developed in Vietnam as a freestanding art form about 500 years ago.  The lacquer itself is actually the resin of a tree which is mixed with coloured pigments and solvents and applied layer after layer to the object's surface, producing a shiny and durable finish. Designs and forms made of mother of pearl or gold leaf are applied to the surface between each layer.  The object is then sanded down to reveal the decoration beneath. Decorated lacquer statues, panels, boxes and trays, some dating back to the Lê era (1428-1527), may still be seen at many temples and pagodas throughout the country.

The gentleman inthe last picture, Mr. Tuan, is a master of the craft and lives in Hanoi.  I learned everthing I know about making lacquer pendants from him during a week of intensive learning in Hanoi.  The other pictures show various technqiues of lacquer painting developed by Mr. Tuan.

We have used these technqiues to create lacquer pendants for you.  All the material has been sourced from Vietnam.
